INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: This is a very "smart" chart...follow the instructions below and you will be amazed at how easy it is to use. The learning experience it provides is unique because it allows you to compare a huge amount of information in one place. You can see that what people die from is dramatically different as they age and even more different depending upon gender and where they live. And this chart also lets you see how the population by gender is affected by these events. You should begin with the United States and then use the scrolling menu at the upper right to select states. For example, HIV-AIDS is the leading cause of death in "DC" until age 55, at that age it is #34 in Montana. Suicide is the leading cause of death among men in Nevada from age 25-44, in Alaska from age 15-44. You should also note we have separated certain causes from their broader category and combined them in others to make them easier to understand. Identifying certain cancers is an example. One cause we are sure will surprise you is "Poisoning." It is the leading cause of death in America ages 35-44. Keep in mind this is an official CDC statistic and includes exposure to noxious substances. Follow the steps below to get started:
1. Choose Gender From Red, Purple and Green Buttons. Note how Cause of Death
Rankings Change.
2. Select Age From Age Links in Center of Chart. We Selected 35-44 For You, See
Highlighted Column.
3. Population By Age and Gender is Directly Above the Age You Selected.
4. Use Scrolling Menu at Upper Right to Add States.
